Kampong Thom, Cambodia – Cashew farmers in Kampong Thom have marked a significant milestone with the successful Foundation Assembly of the Kampong Thom Cashew Nut Geographical Indication (GI), signaling a new chapter for the province’s signature agricultural product.
The achievement was made possible with support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the PEARL Project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, and with technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During the assembly, farmers formally approved the association’s bylaws and quality standards, elected a leadership team, and completed the application process to register both the Producers Association and the “Kampong Thom Cashew Nut” as a Geographical Indication product. The GI status aims to legally protect the unique identity and reputation of cashews grown in the province.
The initiative brings together farmers, cooperatives, processors, and government institutions in a coordinated effort to enhance product quality and market recognition. Stakeholders believe that GI recognition will unlock new market opportunities, strengthen competitiveness, raise incomes, and promote more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices.
The Cashew Nut Association of Cambodia (CAC), the country’s largest and most experienced private cashew sector organization, has played a key role in supporting the development. CAC has previously collaborated with specialized entities, including the Salavisai Organic Cashew Association, and is now working closely with the newly established Association of Kampong Thom Cashew Nut Producers (KTCN), which focuses specifically on GI development.
Beyond a formal gathering, the foundation assembly represents a strategic move toward strengthening Cambodia’s cashew sector in international markets. By diversifying cashew products and enhancing branding through GI recognition, stakeholders aim to position Kampong Thom as a premium origin for high-quality cashew nuts.
The milestone signals growing momentum for Cambodia’s agricultural value chains and a stronger future for cashew farming communities across the province.
